Discovering Eye Patterns
Learning to Read Thought Patterns from the Eyes Using NLP

One of the most amazing discoveries from the field of NLP is that our eyes reveal much about how we think.

I'm sure you've heard it said that the eyes are the windows to the soul.

Perhaps, but they're definitely the windows to the mind.

NLP co-creators, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, found through observation of thousands of people that we move our eyes in certain directions when accessing different parts of the brain.

For instance, when we visualize or imagine something, we tend to look up. When we are feeling an emotion strongly or talking to ourselves, we tend to look down.

Armed with the specifics you can actually begin to tell "how" people are thinking (not what they're thinking — we haven't perfected mind reading... yet!).

The following chart shows the eye patterns for a normally-organized right-handed person, as you look at them. The majority of the people you meet will fit this profile.

NLP Eye Pattern Chart
For a Normally Organized Person, As You Look At Them
VC= Visual Constructed
VR= Visual Remembered
AC= Auditory Constructed
AR= Auditory Remembered
K= Kinesthetic (Feelings)
Ad= Auditory Digital (Self-talk)

Occasionally, you will come across a "reverse organized" person (usually left-handed people). In this case, their eye patterns will be exactly opposite (mirrored).

Eye patterns never mix. They are either normally organized or reverse organized.

How Is This Useful?

This information is useful for many reasons:

  • Discovering how people are processing information so you can communicate effectively, for example
  • With a person processing visually, you'll want to use phrases such as, "I see what you mean," "That looks good," "Things are looking bright."
  • With a person processing auditorilly, you'll want to use phrases such as, "I hear you," "That sounds good," and "That resonates with me."
  • With a person processing kinesthetically (feelings), you'll want to use phrases such as, "I get it," "I feel like it," and "That's a solid idea."

  • If you ask your friend what the person who has a crush on you said, and they go to Auditory Remember, it's likely they're telling the truth.
